Hidden Fees on Crypto Exchanges You Need to Know About
The advertised trading fee is just the tip of the iceberg. Crypto exchanges have numerous hidden fees that can silently erode your profits. Here is every hidden cost you should watch out for.
1. Spread Markup
Some exchanges (especially simple buy/sell interfaces) do not charge an explicit fee but instead widen the bid-ask spread. The price you buy at is inflated, and the price you sell at is deflated.
Example: BTC market price is $67,500
- Exchange shows buy price: $67,800 (0.44% markup)
- Exchange shows sell price: $67,200 (0.44% markdown)
- Total hidden cost: 0.88%
This is common on Coinbase's simple interface, Crypto.com, and other beginner-friendly platforms. Always use the advanced/pro trading interface to avoid this.
2. Conversion Fees
When you use "instant convert" or "swap" features, you often pay a hidden premium. The exchange rate shown includes a 0.5–2% markup that is not displayed as a separate fee.
Fix: Use the order book to place a limit or market order instead of conversion tools.
3. Fiat Deposit Fees
Depositing fiat currency can incur charges:
- Credit/debit card: 1.8–3.5%
- Bank transfer (SWIFT): $5–$25
- ACH/SEPA: Usually free
Fix: Always use bank transfer (ACH/SEPA) for fiat deposits.
4. Withdrawal Minimum Traps
Some exchanges set high minimum withdrawal amounts. If you have $50 of an altcoin but the minimum withdrawal is $100, your funds are effectively trapped until you deposit more or trade it for something else (incurring another trading fee).
5. Inactivity Fees
A few exchanges charge fees if your account has no activity for extended periods (typically 6–12 months). This is rare but worth checking for.
6. Funding Rate (Futures/Margin)
If you trade derivatives, you pay or receive a funding rate every 8 hours. During bullish periods, longs pay shorts — this can be 0.01–0.1% per 8-hour cycle, which adds up to 3% per week in extreme cases.
7. Network Fee Markups
Exchange withdrawal fees are almost always higher than the actual blockchain network fee. Exchanges profit from this markup:
- Actual BTC network fee: ~$1.00
- Binance BTC withdrawal: $0.67 (subsidized!)
- KuCoin BTC withdrawal: $33.75 (massive markup)
